OpenCart
OpenCart is a relatively new open-source e-commerce system and replaces osCommerce as our new favourite. It's code base is well structured and supports the latest PHP technologies, making it a solid platform to build upon. OpenCart also looks great out-of-the-box, it's easy to use, and provides lots of customization flexibility. Because it is new, OpenCart does not yet have much of a community supporting the project, but it is growing rapidly.
We recommend OpenCart for customers who are looking to setup a simple online store that looks great and are thinking about applying a custom design or extra features in the future.

osCommerce
osCommerce is one of the oldest surviving and probably the most popular open-source of e-commerce systems. It has a strong community of users who contribute language packs, feature enhancements, and templates to the project. Unfortunately however, osCommerce is not very well architected and is rather cumbersome to customize or integrate with your web site. Furthermore upgrading a copy of osCommerce that has been customized can be a nightmare.
We recommend osCommerce for customers who are happy with the way osCommerce looks out-of-the-box or have found a nice template. Customizing osCommerce is not recommended. osCommerce may also be a good choice for customers requiring multiple languages or extra features that are provided by the osCommerce community.

Zen Cart
Zen Cart is another open-source e-commerce system that was originally based on osCommerce and is still very similar today. It is not quite as popular as osCommerce so the community surrounding it is not quite as strong. At least not yet. Zen Cart suffers from the same bad architecture as osCommerce and can be a pain to customize.
We don't actually recommend Zen Cart, but some customers prefer it over osCommerce, so we do support it.
